Client Self-Study

MOOD (Museum of Open Design) is a self-study project about creating and branding a museum. Using the influence of eco-brutalist architecture, the museum is designed to replicate spaces harmonizing nature and man-made buildings, giving an eerie, yet comforting liminal space illuminated by both natural and artificial light.

When building out concepts for a museum, I first turned to architecture examples and what museums/exhibitions I most frequently visit.

The exhibits that drew my interest were Yayoi Kusama’s Infinity Mirror Room, TeamLab exhibitions, and James Cameron’s Pandora world building. The mix of vibrant, changing colors bouncing off the walls; it reminded me of my youth days playing with my litebright under my covers late at night. It was the whimsiness of it all and I wanted to recreate that feeling, but in a more mature and curated way.

CONCEPT INSPIRATION

Just to name a few, Studio MK27, Tadao Ando, and Feldman Architecture utilize the contrast between cold concrete buildings and organic nature. I wanted to recreate the interesting harmony, but also implement liminal space and play with color, light, and shadow.

The plan was to have rooms filled with organic elements against brutalist textured walls with varying liminal degrees, all while flooding the room with either natural looking light or artificially colored vibrants. The goal would be to see how each room would affect your mood; If it felt peaceful or gave a sense of anxiety or displacement.
